May 24, Registration for mobilization began early February, and I registered early, but not early enough to make Stream 1 of the Batch A an oversight that would later cause me anxiety. I was fixated on getting posted far away from home, so I ignored my mum who pleaded for me to stay close. This put a lot of strain on me as I couldn't even walk about in the area because I already said my goodbyes a month ago, when NYSC said we would resume, only for them to postpone it.
A series of postponements led PCMS to start calling the people in the know for information on resumption. Even the DG was not left out. There was even a nationwide protest in which grievances were made known. Eventually, light came at the end of the tunnel and camping was fixed for 13th June, and we all got ready for camping. We were asked to reprint the call-up letter. I reprinted mine, saw Katsina and started sweating. Katsina Ke?? I am definately in the den of the Boko Haram. Who were the village witches following me to the extent that my call up was changed from the initial Enugu to this god-forsaken Katsina state?
My mind was filled with great turmoil. I was hoping for a northern state, but Katsina was really strectching oo. Quickly I went on Google to find out stuff about the state.
My initial apprenhensions about security were dispelled after I saw a forum for ex Katsina corpers allaying any fears what so ever. I cannor coman let sum pipu cut my hand because of their girls lol. The total journey would be 22hours,depending on the driver and all things being equal.
The farthest I've gone from home is to Akure back in for my post jamb. And so I boarded the bus headed for Katsina. However, getting a rejection letter from your PPA is not as easy as said because your PPA may not reject you if you ask for it, especially when you are an asset to them. This is a place of work where Corps members are posted to carry out their National assignments after a 21 days training in the Orientation Camp.
There are many reasons a Corps member would want to change his PPA. It may be that they dislike the location. I wanted to serve in a town, but I ended up being posted to a village school.
NYSC: Best Northern States To Serve As A Youth Corper (2020)
It was like a death sentence to me because I had no plan to stay in a remote village. How I wish I had this kind of information. Now, you have seen the power of information? Only if I had the right information at the right time. That is bygone, anyway.
You need to negotiate with the boss at the PPA you are posted to. Sometimes, polite negotiations may not work, especially if your PPA boss find you useful to them.
The reason is simple, most companies, ministries and schools usually write to NYSC, requesting for a particular number of Corps members to serve in their establishments. Some of these employers wait earnestly for your arrival, and now you showed up, you want them to reject and let you go.
As you can see, sometimes polite negotiations may fail. But if you have enough reasons to help your request, you may be lucky. The letter should be in form of a request letter to change your PPA. State the reasons you want to change your PPA. If you have other reasonable reasons, you can bring it up.
I bet, if your reasons are good enough, they will post you to another PPA. So far, I have given you two gentle ways to change your PPA.
The question is, can you act like Nollywood actors? I believe you can if occasion calls for it. This can be hilarious, but believe me, it will work because no employer would like to have an aggressive staff. When reporting to your PPA for the very first time, pretend to be so aggressive. Flair up at every little statement made by the head of your PPA.
Always rant and refuse to hear words. Be so aggressive to him. Tell him plainly that he must keep all the conditions stated on your posting letter, including providing good accommodation. With all your aggressive actions, even a desperate employer will reject and let you go even before you ask for it. This trick will surely work if you act it well.
You must have watched enough Nollywood Movies to know how to act. At the first time you report to your PPA with your posting letter, pretend to be a stammerer. Be should be the first to greet the Principle. Then, tell the Principal you would like to take an important subject like English or Mathematics. Note: Be serious, and do not stammer more than usual before you burst into laugh. So, the point is to speak bad English. Any female teacher or student that pass around, look at their buttock and lick your lip in admiration.
This article is for education purpose only. Then, this is the right post for you. But there is more to it because some states also pay their Corpers.
So you cound be earning about 38 to 40 thousand Naira Monthly in total. The unfortunate antecedents in our national history gave impetus to the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps by decree No. As a developing country. Nigeria is further plagued by the problems attendant upon a cond i tion of underdevelopment, namely; poverty.
In addition, water and sewage facilities, road, healthcare services, and effective communication systems. Faced with these almost intractable problems, which were further compounded by the burden of reconstruction after the civil war, the government and people of Nigeria set for the country, fresh goals, and objectives aimed at establishing Nigeria as:.
Getting a favorable NYSC placement is part of the basic concerns of any fresh university graduate. Everyone is eager to be posted to the NYSC best states. Part of the information required from you is to provide four states of your choice from the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria where you will like to do your NYSC. There are a number of factors to consider when seeking a favorable youth service location. These factors include. Apart from the sum of 33, which the federal government pay to serving corpers, State governments also pay a stipend to serving corpers posted to their states.
The prayer of every Nigerian Corper is to be posted to the best and least expensive state. With knowledge of these concerns, I made some research and put together a list of the best states to undertake your NYSC program and how much these states pay.
Abuja is the place. Abuja has the highest cost of living in the country. There is actually good security and a very good standard of living which makes it suitable for those from a middle-class family.
Abuja is among the best states for nysc. But there is a high chance you will be paid at the organization you work in. The almighty Lagos. Lagos state is the most popular megacity in Nigeria. Asides that, there are many engagements and activities in Lagos state. Many of the factors that come into play in Lagos are transportation cost, high and dense traffic, cost of living. In this article, after carefully considering factors such as security, cost of living, which includes transportation and housing cost, salaries and standard of living, I have listed the ten best states to serve as a corper in Nigeria.
Of all the states with a high cost of living, Abuja is the highest. Forget Lekki, forget Banana Island, Abuja is the main deal. It is very likely that the yam you ate recently is from Abuja. Probably even the tomatoes you used to prepare stew last weekend. This is the reason. Cross River known as the paradise state of the country was once the capital of Nigeria and the most beautiful state in the country. Sumptuous food, rich culture, and a luxurious lifestyle — welcome to Calabar.
Despite the high standard of living in the state, Calabar still has a reasonable cost of living. Affordable transportation fares, inexpensive food, good roads, and a fair accommodation cost, etc.
NYSC BEST STATES AND HOW MUCH THEY PAY
The security in the state is relatively sound. Funny right? Enugu is a complete state. Food is cheap, transportation is fair, and security is good. However, one of the problems that those who live in Enugu face is water. Because of its mountainous terrain, it is usually tricky to drill a borehole which kind of makes water challenging to get.
Mind you; this is not present in all areas of the state. There are more Christians in Niger state than any other Northern state.
Niger state can boast of electricity more than any other state in Nigeria probably because of the presence of the Kanji dam in the state. In addition to the fact that the state government pays, what makes Niger worthy to be on this list is that it an average place to serve; Niger is not exceptional, but it is not a bad place. When you hear Rivers state, the first place that comes to mind is Port Harcourt, but outside Port Harcourt, there are many other excellent local government where you could enjoy your service year.
However, being rich brings class and class comes with an expense. So it is unsurprising that Port Harcourt is one of the cities with the highest cost of living in Nigeria.
In spite of the high cost of living in Port Harcourt, many corps members pick Port Harcourt as their desired service state. I fear this may either be as a result of ignorance or the attraction of the affluent lifestyle present in Port Harcourt. Whatever the reason is, my advice is if you know how to hustle Port Harcourt would be an enjoyable place to serve and meet several dignitaries otherwise choose another state.
Security in the state is dependent on the area. Just be careful of the places you go to and who you go with. Also, contrary to the widespread belief that food is expensive there, Port Harcourt is a place you could get the cheapest seafood in Nigeria. Especially, foods that thrive in rainy seasons such as pumpkin. In Port Harcourt, the cost of transportation depends on the area, to get to some places are cheap and to some other places might not be.As one who served in the north, I know most prospective NYSC corpers would be searching for the best northern states to serve as a youth corper.
No one should blame any one who chooses to redeploy to the south west or south east because information and events filtering everywhere suggest that the north is not safe. While its a known fact that the Northern part of Nigeria is the deadliest region to live, settle or do business in, it is not all places that are unsafe or insecure to serve in.
While the practice of sharia law is very strong in the north due to their Islamic religion which is the most prevalent religion in that area of the country. Before I list out those peaceful northern states to serve in Nigeria as a corp member, I would list the the factors on how I arrived at these states.
List of 9 NYSC Best States and How Much They Pay
Niger state to me is the best place you can serve and do you NYSC in the north. I personally served there and did not regret my stay. I did not experience any security challenge while i was there and during the NYSC orientation camping at paikoro, I was elected as the OBS president when I was a corp member.
You should also be aware that the popular Kainji dam is located in Niger state and it is the largest state in Nigeria in terms of land mass. While I did my service there, the state pay us N6, as allawee. Abuja is another north central state that can be considered safe for corp members to do their youth service.
As we all know that it is the capital of the country and the seat of the president, so the security in Abuja would make it difficult for the threat of Boko Haram or even Herdsmen to thrive. The only disadvantage of serving in Abuja is the high cost of living.
To get an apartment or even a self-contain flat is very expensive unless your place of primary assignment PPA provides it for you. In the FCT, you get more exposure, security and basic amenities. During my time serving, I heard that Abuja paid corp members 10, as allawee. Kano is located in the North west geo-political zone and it is the most developed state in that region.
While we put Kano on this list is because it is one of the cheapest cities to start your business or make money as a corper. Those who lived and served there attest to that. From what we gathered, old corp members do base in the state after their NYSC due to the fact that they like the conditions of Kano or gained employment there. Apart from this, Kano state remains one of the most peaceful states in the north that corpers should do their service in.Mohammed, who made the disclosure at the passing out parade for the batch on Thursday in Kano, said the affected Corps members absconded from their Places of Primary Assignment PPA for about three months.
She added that another 72 members would be disciplined for various offences ranging from extension of service for between two weeks to five months. In his remarks, Gov. According to him, the government of Kano state embarked on some critical projects, such as the extension of basic infrastructures, free and compulsory basic education. He said that other areas given priority included the expansion of tertiary education and agriculture to avail the citizens and visitors full opportunities for self-fulfilment.
The governor urged all corps members to contribute meaningfully to the development of their host communities and the nation at large wherever they might find themselves.
